Overview

Step 1

Check Eligibility

Make sure you are eligible to obtain a security guard or private investigator license.

Step 2

Complete a Criminal Record Check

Download and complete a CRLF and submit it to Cancom Security along with copies of two pieces of identification in picture *(JPEG) or Adobe/PDF format.

Step 3

Arrange an Online Introduction

Call Cancom Security at 416-763-0000 and dial extension 8 to arrange for an online introduction and eligibility meeting.

Step 4

Enroll in Training

Join our online or in person
Security Guard training.

Step 5

Obtain a Training Completion Number

Once you have successfully completed your Security Guard or Private Investigator online training, or both you must contact Cancom Security at 416-763-0000 and dial extension 8 to notify us so we can verify your training completion and assist you with obtaining a TCN – Training Completion Number issued by Serco Services

Step 6

Apply for Your License

After the time as set out by the Ministry you can also download a temporary license so you can seek employment and begin work immediately.

Step 7

Start Working

Upon approval, download your temporary license from Service Ontario to begin employment immediately.

Step 1: Check Eligibility

Before proceeding, ensure you meet the eligibility criteria:

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Hold legal status to work in Canada.
  • Maintain a clear criminal record.

Step 2: Complete a Criminal Record Check

Download and fill out a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRLF) form. Submit it to Cancom Security along with copies of two valid identifications in JPEG or Adobe PDF format.

NAME BASED CRIMINAL RECORD CHECKS
Check of the National Repository of Criminal Records based on a person’s name and date of birth. It may also include searches of other national and local databases.
Turnaround time: 15 minutes

ENHANCED CRIMINAL RECORD CHECKS / CRJMC / LEVEL 2 BACKGROUND CHECK
Includes a review of an individual’s criminal history, as well as other relevant information such as outstanding charges, convictions, pardons, and non-conviction information that may be relevant to an employment or volunteer position where the individual may have a high level of authority, trust, or responsibility.
Turnaround time: 15 minutes

Step 4: Enroll in Training

Security Guard Training
Enroll in Cancom Security’s comprehensive online Security Guard training program, structured into 12 modules. Each module costs $10.00 plus HST and is accessible via our Learning Management System (LMS). Prepare effectively using the Security Guard Study Guide.

Private Investigator Training
Cancom Security offers a detailed Private Investigator training program with 12 modules, priced at $13.00 per module plus HST. Review the Basic Training Requirements for more insights.

Step 5: Obtain a Training Completion Number (TCN)

After finishing your training, contact Cancom Security at 416-763-0000, extension 8, to validate your completion and receive a Training Completion Number (TCN) from Serco Services. This number is essential for scheduling your mandatory examination. Discover more about Security Guard and Private Investigator Testing.

You may also go to any authorized guarantor as set out on the guarantor form, available at forms.mgcs.gov.on.ca

Once your application is approved, you will be mailed your permanent security license at set out at: www.ontario.ca

Step 6: Apply for Your License

Submit your license application through Service Ontario. Pay the licensing fee of $80.00 per license and submit the required forms and identifications as detailed in the Requirements for Security Guards and Private Investigators.
